Correlation between awareness and interest in occupational therapy in high school students in Daejeon and Chungcheong provinces

Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of interest and awareness of occupational therapy in high school students in Daejeon and Chungcheong provinces, to analyze the correlation between them, and to find a way to promote occupational therapy in the future.

Methods : Participants were 209 high school students in high schools in Chungcheong and Daejeon. The questionnaire survey was conducted through Google Links and analyzed using SPSS (version 18.0) statistical program. First, frequency analysis was conducted to examine the general charateristics, occupational therapy awareness, and occupational therapy interest. Second, a ?ÉÖ test was conducted to determine occupational therapy interest according to the recognition of the name of the occupational therapy.

Results : 68.4% of the participants had no previous knowledge on occupational therapy in the recognition of the name of the occupational therapy, and 61.2% of the respondents said that they would like to know about the concept of occupational therapy in the future. 78.5% of the respondents did not wish to study occupational therapy in higher education. As a result of the correlation analysis between awareness and interest, the participants who had previous knowledge about occupational therapy showed significantly more interest in occupational therapy. Also, the mentoring?mentee activities and lectures were picked to be the most appropriate way to promote occupational therapy to highschool students with 23.3% and 21.3%, respectively.

Conclusions : This study confirms that there is a correlation between awareness and interest on occupational therapy in highschool students. In addition, We would like to provide basic data on how to promote occupational therapy to high school students in Daejeon and Chungcheong provinces.
